Circle Behavior is a Mindset, Not Just Technique
Some takeaways from the masterclass by Alyson Annan on circle behavior
I had the immense pleasure of hosting Alyson Annan for a masterclass on circle behavior at The Hockey Site in December 2023. Her presentation and the Q&A's from the coaches who were there as well, gave us almost 90 minutes of hockey wisdom.
Here are just some takeaways from this masterclass :)
Circle Behavior is a Mindset, Not Just Technique
Alyson emphasized that effective circle behavior goes beyond technical skills—it’s about mindset. Players need to focus on positioning, timing, and decision-making. For example, attackers should avoid drifting out of the circle unnecessarily and instead reposition within the circle to maintain pressure and create scoring opportunities. Staying in the circle and being ready to act is a critical behavioral aspect.
Celebrate Success Beyond Just Scoring Goals
Alyson highlighted the importance of recognizing and celebrating successful actions that lead to scoring opportunities, even if they don’t result in a goal. A well-executed scoring pass—where the ball is played from outside the circle to a player inside—is a success in itself. Similarly, rebounds, second shots, and passes to better-positioned teammates are all valuable outcomes that contribute to efficient circle play.
Utilizing Space and Gathering Information
Good circle behavior involves understanding and using available space effectively. Alyson pointed out that attackers should gather information constantly—where the defenders, teammates, and goal are—rather than just watching the ball. This awareness allows players to position themselves optimally and make quick, effective decisions, such as moving into open space or preparing for a rebound.
